Life can be unpredictable sometimes. One day you can have somewhere to move and the next suddenly you have no new abode prospects or maybe you are unsure we’re you’ll be moving but need to store your items somewhere. Whilst there are a range of companies that will be able to help you out, the most effective channel will be by finding a removalist who also offers on-site storage facilities. But how do you choose someone in such a flooded market? How do you find out whether your goods will be tucked away safely until the dust settles and you’re ready to retrieve them?
The first step is trying not to panic! Whilst finding out that the place you were moving to has fallen through is stressful, try to stay calm and rational. There are a range of storage facilities out there that are able to help you keep your goods safe in a pinch. Another thing to think about is the type of storage you would like to use.
Typically, storage facilities are delivered in one of two ways. The first is the self-storage option. Self-storage facilities mean that you are able to go the facility and retrieve your goods at any stage. More often than not you are able to retrieve your goods at any time of day. Depending on where they are located this may also mean that the rate for the container and/or space used will be less. This is because there will be – as aforementioned – less maintenance, less security and less flexibility. As mentioned, your best bet for both the move-in and move-out of any storage facility is through a reputable removalist. If you can’t be there to supervise at either end, you can be sure that the removalists will efficiently and safely be able to retrieve your goods from a public facility. Check with your public storage facility as they may be partnered with local removals companies who may be able to help you out.
The other option that you have is to opt for a closed storage facility. These facilities are often available onsite of a reputable removalist company. The majority of the time they offer a variety of superior assurances that the public facilities are unable to offer. These storage facilities are often CCTV monitored, equipped with back to base security systems and are temperature controlled to predict more sensitive items (pro-tip: if you have antique items that you want to preserve this is the way to go!). Because these facilities are often smaller than public ones, there will be more frequent checks to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your stored goods. In addition, these facilities are more likely to offer long-term storage solutions at a cheaper rate due to the lower overheads of smaller facility.
Be aware that often there will be cheaper options at your fingertips. What these lesser accredited facilities don’t tell you is that they are not equipped with full security systems needed to protect your goods and ensure theft does not occur. Before you leap into the pool that is the storage facility landscape think carefully about all the factors that could affect your goods. Where is the facility located? Does it have adequate surveillance measures? Most importantly, does it tick all the boxes for you as a customer? If you are unsure about any of the above, be sure to get in contact with a nationally recognised removalist who will be able to give you more information.
